Succulent Planters

Create your own trendy geometric succulent planters out there using scrap wood and a Bernzomatic torch!

Directions

1. Cut 4x4 (actual dimensions 3 1/2” x 3 1/2”) down into 3 pieces 5” long. You can use the Japanese pull saw for this, but if you have a miter saw, use that to save some time.
   
2. Use the Japanese pull saw and start cutting random angles off the chunks of wood. Flip the pieces after each cut to help the angles come out totally random.
   
   
   
3. Sand the piece. Use a belt sander to make quick work of any rough edges. The sanding doesn’t have to be perfect because of the next step, but the goal of sanding is to make sure you get out any of your saw marks.
   
4. Burn your pieces or Shou-Sugi-Ban them. Use the Bernzomatic TS8000 High Heat torch with Map Pro for this as it burns hotter and quicker making this project fly by. This torch also has a lock button so you don’t have to hold the button down the entire time you are burning your piece.
   
5. Using a wire bush, brush off all the excess soot from the piece. This also helps get rid of some of the soft wood and helps reveal the grain pattern and texture in the wood.
   
   
6. Using your drill and forstner bit, drill a hole in the center of your planter 2” deep. Be sure to clamp piece down when drilling hole.
   
7. Paint or seal your planters your desired color.
8. Plant your favorite succulents. It is recommended to add some tiny pebbles to the bottom to allow for drainage and/or drill a hole so excess water can drain.
