Tiki Wall Art

Shou Sugi Ban is the perfect technique to highlight the textures and grain on this power carved DIY Tiki Wall Art.

Directions

1. Choose your piece of wood and trim to desired size.
2. Select desired tiki design. Once selected, draw a rough outline on the piece of wood to prep for carving.
3. Carve your tiki using various sized carving burrs, based on your design. This project required ¼ ”, ½” and 1/8” burrs to carve out and smooth the various lines.
4. Use Shou Sugi Ban technique and burn the entire piece once using the Bernzomatic TS8000 High Heat Torch and Map Gas . Then, use a wire brush to remove the soot and help give a raised grain look by removing some of the softer parts of the wood. Burn again and brush one more time. Repeat 3 times or until desired color look is achieved.
5. Cut out backer panel (Featured backer size: 18”W x 27”L and Tiki: 6”W x 25”L). In order to get the curve consistent on both sides, lay out three points and drill screws into the board. Then, curve a piece of bender board around the screws and trace the line it created. Use a jigsaw the cut out the shape and clean up the edges with a sander.
6. Apply a generous coat of outdoor finishing oil on the tiki portion. Optional: Paint your backer panel with desired color.
7. Attach the two pieces. Clamp the tiki where you want it on the backer, then flip over and secure with screws on the backside of the backer. Add mounting hardware and hang.
