Solder Copper Pipe

Soldering copper pipe is a plumbing project most people can do themselves with a Bernzomatic torch and just a few essential, inexpensive materials.

  • Soldering is a technique used most frequently for plumbing repairs and installations, but can also be used to create jewelry, connect circuit wires or automotive repair.
  • Solder should be melted by the heat of the metal pieces being joined, not by direct contact with the flame of the torch.

  • Always remove torch from fuel cylinder and store fuel in an upright position after completing your project.

Steps

  1. Brush the outside of the pipe and inside of the fitting thoroughly with an abrasive, such as sandpaper, the Bernzomatic S4N1B Four-in-One Pipe Fitting Brush or Bernzomatic SCSYD Water Resistant Sand Cloth .
  2. Brush flux onto the inside of fitting the outside of pipe, then slide the pipe and fitting together.
  3. Ignite the torch. Heat the entire joint evenly until the solder can be melted by the heat of the joint, rather than the flame of the torch. Move the torch to the far end of the joint.
  4. Touch the solder to the joint. When the joint is hot enough, the solder will be drawn into the joint, creating a seal.
